Mars Needs Women

(more) »rank: 65144

starring: Don Campbell (II), Bubbles Cash, Yvonne Craig, Chet Davis, Pat Delaney

Our review: :Mars Needs Women is as bad or as good as its title suggests--either way, you're going to marvel at this mess-terpiece. The red planet has a female shortage due to 'a critical recession of the Y chromosome,' so Tommy Kirk (stalwart of '60s Disney flicks) leads a trio of fellow Martians to recruit fertile Earth chicks, including a stripper (of course), a stewardess (er, flight attendant), and a brainy reporter (the latter played by Yvonne Craig of 'Batgirl' fame). Filmed in Texas on a budget of (apparently) a few hundred bucks, this bad-movie milestone incorporates Air Force archival footage, a time-capsule glimpse of ...

Species

(more) »rank: 61986

starring: Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Alfred Molina, Forest Whitaker, Marg Helgenberger
directed: Roger Donaldson

Our review: :There's a kind of perverse marketing genius at work in this cheesy sci-fi hit from 1995 in which scientists create a half-human, half-alien woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) who's capable of morphing from a slimy, tentacled creature into a blond babe with the body of a Playboy centerfold. This makes it easy for Sil to lure gullible guys who are only too willing to indulge her voracious mating urge, realizing too late that sex with Sil is anything but safe. As the body count rises, a handpicked team of specialists tracks the alien's killing spree, but their diverse expertise is barely a match ...

Men in Black (Collector's Series) - DTS

(more) »rank: 66968

starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D'Onofrio, Rip Torn
directed: Barry Sonnenfeld

Our review: essential video:This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work ...
