Our review:Description:Josey Wales is a farmer turned fugitive in the post-civil war south who is chased by the law after he avenges the murder of his family and friends.DVD Features:Introduction:Introduction by Clint Eastwood Other:'Hell Hath No Fury' - 30:25 'Eastwood in Action' - 7:45 essential video:Clint Eastwood fired the original director, Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff), and took over the reins of this project himself. He may have had a point: this brutal, thoughtful western, a near-tragedy about a Civil War veteran whose past comes looking for him, is probably Eastwood's most mature frontier drama prior to the Oscar winning Unforgiven. ...

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol

(more) »rank: 3386

starring: Jim Backus, Morey Amsterdam, Jack Cassidy, Royal Dano, Paul Frees
directed: Abe Levitow

Our review: :This 1962 special marked the last hurrah of Mr. Magoo, who starred in 43 cartoon shorts, including two Oscar® winners, from the UPA Studio between 1949 and 1959. Magoo appears as Scrooge in a Broadway production of 'A Christmas Carol' in this minimally animated hour. The play-within-the-show features forgettable songs by Jules Styne and Bob Merrill: Tiny Tim ('played' by the animated character Gerald McBoing-Boing) sings, oddly, of 'razzle berry dressing' and 'woofle jelly cake.' This retelling of Dickens's holiday standard is much tamer than Richard Williams's Oscar-winning adaptation: the ghosts aren't scary, nor does Magoo confront the specters of Ignorance ...

The Red Badge of Courage

(more) »rank: 17535

starring: Audie Murphy, Bill Mauldin, Douglas Dick, Royal Dano, John Dierkes
directed: John Huston

Our review:Description:Psychological study of an untried young Union soldier who panics in his first encounter with the enemy but regains his courage and emerges a hero. Based on Stephen Crane's novel. Screenplay by John Huston. :John Huston's The Red Badge of Courage, like Orson Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons, is a heartbreakingly beautiful film mutilated by its studio after a disastrous preview process. You can--and should--read the fascinating production history in Lillian Ross's Picture. Picture is a classic--and so's the movie, even in a 69-minute reduction featuring a climactic Civil War battle that has Stephen Crane's young hero wearing his red badge of ...
